First Day of School

Yes, it is hard to believe! School started in our neck of the woods on Monday. The first morning of school went rather smoothly. Both the LuLu and the MyMy woke up on their own and were dressed and ready a 1/2 hour before we needed to leave. Here they are in their brand new uniforms.

At the end of the first day, the LuLu came in with tears spilling down her cheeks. The first day of Jr. High was a little overwhelming. She is slowing becoming comfortable with the change.

The MyMy came in with a huge smile after her first day of school. She was very happy and enthusiastic. That enthusiasm did not last however, because by the time the next morning rolled around the MyMy was not very eager about another school day. And so it goes. One week down and 36 weeks to go- but who's counting?

Good Night Moon

Last night as I was lying in bed, I heard the moon calling for me. I quietly tiptoed from my room, down the hall and outside. I was hoping the warm Arizona night would calm my shivers, helping me to relax so I could settle in for the night. The night was so quiet and peaceful- a feeling I was so desperately wanting for myself. I admired the shadows surrounding me, hoping to feel their actual embrace so I wouldn't feel so alone. I looked for twinkling stars dancing in the night, and couldn't find one to form a wish on. I was alone with the moon and realized that I needed the moon, and the moon needed me.

When the MyMy was a little girl and a full moon was out, I would show her the moon and recite the children's verse.

I see the moon, the moon sees me.
God bless the moon, and God bless me.

Somehow, the verse brought comfort to my heart. It made me realize how blessed I am, and that I am loved. I could only stay outside in the Arizona heat for 20 minutes or so. The heat didn't calm my shivers, it just made me sweat. I did however sit in a comfy chair gazing at the moon through a window inside my air conditioned home, and that in itself was somewhat magical. After awhile the call to slumber finally came and I was able to quietly tiptoe back down the hall and crawl into bed relaxed and sleepy.

Good night moon. I look forward to our next visit.

Culture in Small Town USA!

Occasionally our rural community gets treated to a night of cultural arts which is always a treat. We happened to be in town for one such event the other night. Flyers were prominently placed on walls, windows and tables advertising the event, making sure that none would miss.

The planning and practice, for this event to occur, took a long, grizzly and enduring 10 minutes, which made for a spectacular evening of culture.

The costume was exquisite and required a refastening every few seconds. Hands were held over the heart for a few bars of our countries anthem. The ability to multi-task- playing an instrument, twirling and kicking all at the same time, made us stand in awe.... wondering, how all of this talent could be in yet, only one, eight year-old child? Amazing!

The evening was superb and will be held in our memories for quite some time!
